India is truly a fresh pool of amazing musicians. There wasn’t a single day where we didn’t meet one. Even on our last day in Mumbai when we had to take the train back to Chennai to catch our plane, we spent the last two hours to meet up with Nitin and his friend Mark in their studio. And almost missed our train as a result. Either way, it would have been well worth it, after we heard what the two musicians were capable of playing on their instruments!

Nitin lived in Australia for three years where he met a common friend and from whom he heard about the Sailing Conductors. He now lives in Mumbai and works as a music composer, producer and piano player. We’re just glad to have met these two guys, even though it was only for such a short time!

Neil Gomes

There is hardly an instrument he can’t play. Unfortunately he didn’t manage to bring his cello and violin because both instruments got damaged when heavy rain flooded his entire basement.

We met the all-round musician Neil on the stairs on our way to Shanky’s place on the 6th floor where the elevator had just stopped working. After the sweaty way up this nice guy quickly turned out to be the perfect guy for our project and we couldn’t stop staring when he started playing and singing.

Marvin is a passionate Jazz drummer from Singapore. Together with some friends he owns a music store called MusicGear where he is responsible for the drums section. We met Marvin through some great German guys who are studying in Singapore at the moment. They had heard about the Sailing Conductors through a friend, and wrote an email to us when they realized we were in Singapore at that time. They’d been to MusicGear a couple of times before where they’d met Marvin. When we recorded Marvin in his studio it was his birthday, so thanks a lot Marvin for taking your precious time!

Check out his awesome music store when you’re in Singapore next time! www.MusicGear.com

It is pure coincidence that Jay became one of ‘our’ musicians. He is actually a successful music producer from Bangkok in Thailand and has a music project named Katsue together with the Thai pop singer Joni Anwar. We were in Jay’s music studio to work on a song together and suddenly he was on the microphone himself and sang the chorus for our “Being Slow”. We spent three days in his house and didn’t do anything but make music. What a great guy!

Natthapong Yutthanasirikul, also known as Jay, plays violin in the “Siam Sinfonietta” orchestra in Bangkok. Just at the same time as we were in Hua Hin, the orchestra gave a concert at the “Mrigadayavan Palace of Love and Hope”. We were excited and talked to the violinist right after the concert – a violin would fit perfectly to our new song “Being Slow”. Jay liked our concept and was keen to meet us for a recording session. Unfortunately, the daylight was gone after the first rehearsals, so that the filming outside was not possible and we therefore set up our mics inside the house. The musician lives together in the house with the conductor of the orchestra – the brilliant Thai-American musical composer S.P. Somtow who we contacted before our arrival and through whom the contact to the orchestra was possible in the first place. A wonderful house full of musical instruments, plain perfect for us.

The recording with Jay was fun, the musician buckled down and that’s exactly what you can hear in his music!

Pimluk, or just “Mai”, sings in the Bangkok “Siam Sinfonietta” orchestra. Many musicians were performing at the Hua Hin “Mrigadayavan Palace of Love and Hope” at the same time that we happened to be there. We were actually meeting the brilliant Thai-American musical composer and conductor S.P. Somtow, when we coincidentally saw and heard Mai on stage, accompanied by the orchestra. We both knew exactly what we were going to do once the concert was over: get ahold of Mai, interview her and arrange a meeting for the next day. And that’s what we did. As a nice shooting location we decided on the garden of the “King’s Palace” in Bangkok. Mai is a nice girl who always has a smile on her face and the recordings with her were a lot of fun.
